A blog analyzing Major League Baseball through the lens of Astrology
Welcome to Astrology Baseball, a project where I arrange MLB players into teams based on their astrological signs, and then pit those teams against each other in mock fantasy seasons.
2024 Cancer Preview
Historically speaking, Cancer has generally had a strong offense with a weak pitching staff. Barring some crazy unforeseen circumstances, that will hold true for the Crabs this year, especially since their ace Shohei Ohtani (ranked #11 by MLB.com as a DH-only player) will not pitch this season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
2024 Pisces Preview
Pisces seems primed to take the trophy in the Water Division, thanks to a dynamic offense and bullpen, coupled with a good-enough starting staff. What the Fish lack top of the scale star power, they make up for in consistency across the board, whereas the other two signs in the division are helplessly lopsided in talent distribution.
2024 Gemini Preview
Perhaps this is appropriate, given Gemini’s dual nature, but no sign has more separation between their pitchers and batters, in terms of fantasy upside. In fact, the Twins have the best pitching depth in the game, but struggle to find enough position players to fill out their starting lineup.
2024 Aquarius Preview
I spend a lot of time dunking on Aquarius for being generally hapless in the Fantasy Astrology Baseball League standings. And while that diagnosis probably holds true in 2024, at least the Water Bearers aren’t ranked at the very bottom, according to MLB.com’s ranking of the top 300 players.
2024 Libra Preview
It’s a little bit ironic to feature the Air Division second, because two of the three signs in that division are basically guaranteed a bottom-third finish. But Libra is the top-ranked sign in the Positive League (according to MLB.com’s ranking of the top 300 players), so we’re celebrating the top-end.
2024 Taurus Preview
Baseball people have a saying: pitching wins championships. That’s the main reason why Taurus will struggle to contend this year in the Fantasy Astrology Baseball League, at least considering MLB.com’s ranking of the top 300 players, and positional rankings in Lindy’s Fantasy magazine.
2024 Capricorn Preview
It was a surprise for me to see Capricorn right near the top of the Fantasy Astrology Baseball League, when evaluating using MLB.com’s ranking of the top 300 players. And while there is undeniable star power, you’ll see that lack of depth makes the Sea Goats situation more tenuous than it may at first appear.
2024 Virgo Preview
The Earth Division looks like the strongest heading into the Fantasy Astrology Baseball League Season, according to rankings from MLB.com and Lindy’s magazine. These ranks support Virgo as the strongest overall sign, who also happened to win the league in points in 2023.
2024 Fantasy Astrology Power Rankings
I had a striking realization last week. On Thursday 2/22, to be exact. Baseball is back! With Spring Training officially underway, my attention has shifted away from the historical angle of this project, and into the present. So now it’s time for my first annual Fantasy Astrology Power Rankings!
1945 Fantasy Astrology Recap
In 1945, many of MLB’s best star players were away fighting overseas in World War II. I thought that this might be an opportunity to showcase more Negro League players in the Fantasy Astrology ranks, but that proved not to be the case: despite segregation in sports, many of the top Negro League stars went away to war as well.
1946 Fantasy Astrology Recap
1946 is considered the first year of the Baby Boomer generation. Back then, the postwar optimism was high, the baseball was segregated, and the division winners in the Fantasy Astrology Baseball league were all pretty cut and dry – the same Final Four as in 1947, in fact.
1947 Fantasy Astrology Recap
1947 is year two of including Negro League players in my Astrology All-Time Database, and while it’s great to analyze the statistics and learn the history of the best Black and Latin players of the day, it’s also frustrating to see how much these players could have accomplished were they not excluded from the established Major League ranks at the time.
1948 Negro Leagues Pitchers
It’s been a constant of Fantasy Astrology Baseball, for as long as I’ve been doing this project, that Cancer has trouble finding starting pitching depth. But this whole situation changes when you look at the Negro Leagues, which has no statistical information after 1948.
1948 Negro League Batters
The 1948 Aries Rams had a pretty solid outfield when considering only players in the established Major Leagues at the time. But there’s another Aries outfielder who just emerged on my database for the 1948 season: leftfielder Lester Lockett of the Baltimore Elite Giants (pronounced EE-light). That’s because 1948 is the last year where Baseball Reference has statistics for the Negro Leagues, of which BEG were the champions.
1948 Fantasy Astrology Recap
I was very excited to reach 1948 in my reverse chronological trip through baseball history, because it’s the last year with readily available Negro League statistics. I could wait to learn about the influx of amazing athletes, and add them to my All-Time Major League Astrology database, because the Negro Leagues are Major Leagues.
1949 Fantasy Astrology Recap
We’ve reached a milestone as we enter the 1940’s: 1949 was the last year, reverse-chronologically speaking, before my database will include Negro League teams. At least there’s a silver lining for this last year of predominantly white baseball: the top four scoring signs in 1949 all made the Fantasy Astrology postseason!
FABL 1950s Recap
The calendar flipping to 2024 seems like a perfect excuse to dust off this old blog and start posting regularly. When last we left our reverse-chronological trip through Fantasy Astrology Baseball History, we had finished the last year of the 1950s. So before starting a new decade, it’s fitting to look back at the ten years we just covered.
FABL 2023 Awards Recap
The Thanksgiving holiday has given me some time to calculate the yearly Fantasy Astrology award winners. Since I already looked at the final four at the end of the regular season, the focus of this post will be exclusively the top players of each league, and how they compared with the field.
FABL 2023 Finals - Cancer vs Libra
In a completely shocking and unforeseen twist, the Cancer Crabs have stormed back from behind and defeated the Virgo Flowers in the 2023 Fantasy Astrology Baseball League semifinals! Find out how this could have happened after Virgo had such a commanding lead after week one of the two-week matchup.
FABL 2023 Playoff Wk 1 Update
It’s one week into (i.e. halfway through) the semifinal matchups, and one question rises to the top: can anyone stop Virgo? Their total of nearly 1,500 points over the first week is nigh-untouchable.
