2023 Gemini Season - Negative Signs
Now that the karmic wheel has flipped to Gemini Season, it’s high time I took a look at the actual 2023 MLB season. I’ve been stuck in historical mode, trying to get through the 1950s and into the 40’s, so that I could start analyzing the Fantasy Astrology Negro Leagues. But the break in decades is a good opportunity to pay lip service to the current season.
I compiled fantasy point totals for all 12 signs’ as of the last day of Taurus Season (5/20, by all accounts) and it’s far too early to determine a frontrunner at this point. In fact, the starting rosters for exactly half the league scored over 9,000 points, with the leader topping out at less than 9,500. As a reminder, “starting rosters” are one position player for all 9 positions in the batting order, 5 starting pitchers, and 3 relievers; so going forward, if you want to find out points-per-player, just divide by 17.
The top two signs were both Earth signs, and they were separated by just 10 (ten!) fantasy points! Taurus edged out Virgo 9,482 to 9,472 thanks to Rays ace Shane McClanahan and newly-rich Yankee slugger Aaron Judge. But VIR has the clear advantage in star power, with the foursome of Gerrit Cole, Freddie Freeman, Marcus Semien, and Paul Goldschmidt all breaking the 700-point barrier.
Things were nearly as close in the Water Division, with Cancer topping Pisces by a 30-point margin. Shohei Ohtani was always going to turn the most heads on the Crabs roster, what with his 709 fantasy points as a DH () and 718 as a pitcher (). But the most interesting part of Cancer’s point-leaders is who’s NOT among them: #1 ranked Trea Turner and perennial All-Star Manny Machado are currently being edged out of their primary positions by Baltimore shortstop Jorge Mateo and Rays super utility threat Taylor Walls. Meanwhile, the biggest stories for the Fish are the emergence of Adolis Garcia for the Rangers, and the realization that Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw has still got it.
Suffice it to say, there’s not much going on with either Scorpio or Capricorn, as a whole. Spencer Strider and Rafael Devers have put up some fine individual performances for the Stingers, and the return of Fernando Tatis Jr. and the emergence of Carlos Estevez are notable for the Sea Goats. But they remain second-division teams… along with 2/3 of the Positive Polarity signs, which I will focus on next time!
