A blog analyzing Major League Baseball through the lens of Astrology
Welcome to Astrology Baseball, a project where I arrange MLB players into teams based on their astrological signs, and then pit those teams against each other in mock fantasy seasons.
Taurus Season Roster Update 2024
When I build the rosters for the Fantasy Astrology Baseball League teams each year, I rely heavily on preseason rankings. But as more and more games get played, we can start looking at fantasy point totals, to see which early breakout performers should merit addition to rosters for Taurus season, which began last Saturday.
2024 Capricorn Preview
It was a surprise for me to see Capricorn right near the top of the Fantasy Astrology Baseball League, when evaluating using MLB.com’s ranking of the top 300 players. And while there is undeniable star power, you’ll see that lack of depth makes the Sea Goats situation more tenuous than it may at first appear.
2024 Fantasy Astrology Power Rankings
I had a striking realization last week. On Thursday 2/22, to be exact. Baseball is back! With Spring Training officially underway, my attention has shifted away from the historical angle of this project, and into the present. So now it’s time for my first annual Fantasy Astrology Power Rankings!
1947 Fantasy Astrology Recap
1947 is year two of including Negro League players in my Astrology All-Time Database, and while it’s great to analyze the statistics and learn the history of the best Black and Latin players of the day, it’s also frustrating to see how much these players could have accomplished were they not excluded from the established Major League ranks at the time.
FABL 1950s Recap
The calendar flipping to 2024 seems like a perfect excuse to dust off this old blog and start posting regularly. When last we left our reverse-chronological trip through Fantasy Astrology Baseball History, we had finished the last year of the 1950s. So before starting a new decade, it’s fitting to look back at the ten years we just covered.
2023 All-Star Reserves
It’s finally here: the day of the MLB All-Star Game! Which means it’s time to tally up the astrological signs of the rosters, including starters, pitchers, and reserves. Full disclosure: I know this does not technically represent the full rosters, because several players have been replaced due to injury.
2023 All-Star Pitchers
Last time, I broke down the 2023 All-Star starting lineups in terms of astrological signs. Leo was the clear leader, with five of the 18 players under consideration. The Lions were ahead of a crowded second place field: five different signs had two players each.
2023 Gemini Season - Negative Signs
Now that the karmic wheel has flipped to Gemini Season, it’s high time I took a look at the actual 2023 MLB season. I’ve been stuck in historical mode, trying to get through the 1950s and into the 40’s, so that I could start analyzing the Fantasy Astrology Negro Leagues. But the break in decades is a good opportunity to pay lip service to the current season.
1954 Fantasy Astrology Recap
My obsession with filling bullpen spots with dedicated relievers really played havoc with the 1954 Fantasy Astrology Baseball League standings. To be clear, for my “official” standings, I will include any pitcher with more relief appearances than starts in a bullpen slot. But the difference is striking: Scorpio finished in first place in the league while following the looser guidelines, but they fall all the way to fifth when eligibility rules are followed.
1955 Fantasy Astrology Recap
One nice piece of trivia about the 1955 Fantasy Astrology Baseball season is that all four division winners remain the same, regardless of positional eligibility shenanigans. Another is that the top three scoring signs were all Fire Signs. Sagittarius, once again led by Al Kaline, takes the top spot. Leo is in second, without a 2,000-point scorer to their name. Aries had the starting pitcher for the real-life American League All-Stars Billy Pierce, but ended up in third place overall.
1956 Fantasy Astrology Recap
One thing that stands out about the FABL-leading 1956 Sagittarius Archers is that their starting roster includes four former Negro League players. Not only that, but Minnie Minoso, Larry Doby, Harry Simpson, and Sam Jones all broke into the AL/NL hierarchy with the Cleveland Indians. It’s curious that despite the club’s racist mascot and moniker, they seemed to be at the forefront in terms of recruiting Black and Latin players.
1958 Fantasy Astrology Recap
In the 10-year stretch from 1958 to 1967, only two signs led the Fantasy Astrology Baseball League in point totals. Leo had a seven-to-three advantage over Libra, but the 1958 season went to the Scales, the only sign to score as many as 25,000 points on the year.
WBC 2023 Venezuela
When Taurus second baseman Jose Altuve suffered a fractured thumb from a hit-by-pitch in the World Baseball Classic, broadcaster John Smoltz was quick to defend the tournament. “He would have been at Spring Training, and do you know how many players get hurt in Spring Training? A lot!”
WBC 2023 Dominican Republic
In my last post, I asserted that Team USA had the most star-studded roster in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. I would argue that the Dominican Republic comes in second, despite the fact that they didn’t make it past the Pool Play stage of the tournament.
WBC 2023 Team USA
The World Baseball Classic is moving into the Quarterfinal Stage, with the best talent from around the world representing their countries of origin! With Team USA advancing to the next round of the WBC, I’m looking at the astrological implications of the tournament’s most star-studded roster.
Fantasy Astrology Football
I haven’t watched a single NFL game this season, regular season or playoffs. But based on my quick analysis of fantasy football points and astrological signs, I have a pretty confident pick of who will win the Super Bowl: the Philadelphia Eagles!
1961 Fantasy Astrology Recap
When the universal designated hitter was established prior to the 2022 season, it ended a 50-year streak of the American and National Leagues playing by different rules. But the DH wasn’t the first time the AL and NL were at odds with each other: in 1961, American League teams played 162 games, while the National League was still stuck in the old 154-game schedule.
1962 World Series Teams
1962 was the last Fantasy Astrology recap that I got to during the 2022 season, which is indeed what kicked off the whole “years ending in 2” project of the last several weeks. The real-life 1962 season culminated in a World Series where the New York Yankees defeated the San Francisco Giants.
1972 World Series Teams
1972 is a fun year for me to write about, because my favorite real-life team, the Oakland Athletics, won the World Series! Not only that, it would be the first season of a three-year dynasty. The A’s defeated the Cincinnati Reds in ’72 to start their run, which is notable because those two teams would meet again in the 1990 Fall Classic, with the Reds coming out on top that time.
1982 World Series Teams
I have no frame of reference for the 1982 World Series, since it occurred several years before I was born. But a trivial matter such as not yet being alive can’t stop our decade-by-decade look back at the World Series teams from years ending in 2. So here is a Fantasy Astrology-themed look at the victorious St. Louis Cardinals and the American League Champion (yes, you read that right) Milwaukee Brewers.
