Earth Day Updates
In honor of Earth Day (which, appropriately enough, falls near the start of Taurus Season, the first earth sign on the karmic wheel) I’m taking a look at some of the top players so far this season who were left off each sign’s opening day roster. All of these stats are as of the start of Taurus Season (i.e. 4/20). As a reminder, you can see those rosters by clicking the “Fantasy Astrology League” link in the upper right corner… or just right here.
Prior to the season, I would have stacked Virgo’s first base depth chart with last year’s World Series MVP Freddie Freeman at the top, followed by 2022 NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt, and only then possibly Spencer Torkelson, who was optioned to the minors for 58 games last year. But in the early weeks of 2025, it has been the opposite so far, with the Tigers out to an impressive AL Central-leading start. I also overlooked a pair of Giants - outfielder Mike Yastrzemski and infielder Tyler Fitzgerald - as San Francisco has a better record than Detroit, but is stuck in third place in a stacked NL West.
Sticking with the Giants, designated hitter Wilmer Flores is using his holdover eligibility to shore up Leo’s first base situation, edging out the likes of Yandy Diaz and Ryan O’Hearn. Also for Leo, Mariners super-utility threat Dylan Moore is currently occupying third base, with Alec Bohm struggling, although he can also spell Matt McLain and Xavier Edwards up the middle. Back to the NL West, Geraldo Perdomo has stormed out of the gates for Arizona, outscoring such luminary Libra shortstops as Oneil Cruz, Mookie Betts (both of whom still make the starting lineup as outfielders), Xander Bogaerts, and the injured CJ Abrams.
Gemini’s offense has been the stuff of legends (the bad kind) in recent years, but Rays first baseman Jonathan Aranda is making a bid to join Bobby Witt Jr. as their second good hitter in the lineup. Pisces already has a very expensive franchise first baseman in Vladimir Guerrero Jr., but the emergence of Ben Rice for the Yankees has made Vladdy Jr.’s early season slump easier to stomach. The Fish are also benefiting from Rays rookie outfielder Jake Mangum and Guardians sophomore infielder Gabriel Arias.
Meanwhile, another Rays rookie outfielder, Kameron Misner, has joined the Capricorn outfield, alongside Michael Tucker, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Julio Rodriguez. Rounding things out with this blogger’s hometown sign, the Cancer Crabs have had a jolt behind the plate from Carson Kelly, fueled by his cycle against the A’s in the first ever MLB game played in West Sacramento. Also Boston rookie Kristian Campbell should help out both at second base and in center field.
On the pitching side, Pisces has the top left-off-the-roster performer in Max Meyer, although the young Marlins hurler’s edge likely has a lot to do with the fact that he’s now started five games, compared to four for most other pitchers on this list. One of these is Kris Bubic for Leo, who has seen a triumphant return to the Royals rotation, and Hayden Wesneski, who solidifies the Sagittarius pitching staff following his offseason trade from the Cubs to the Astros (in the deal for the aforementioned Capricorn Kyle Tucker).
In terms of quantity, Virgo had two overlooked starters added to their rotation: Andre Pallante for the struggling Cardinals and Landed Roupp for the surprising Giants. But no sign has had a more unforeseen (or, quite frankly, chaotic) pitching situation than Aries. As of 4/20, only two pitchers who were projected for the starting five were actually among their top five scoring starters: the injured Zach Eflin, and the converted reliever Clay Holmes. The other three spots would be filled by White Sox Rule 5 pick Shane Smith, Astros long reliever Ryan Gusto (two starts in six appearances), and White Sox free agent signee Martin Perez, who will be missing the majority of the season due to injury.
It’s still the early days of the 2025 season, and small sample size warning apply. But a good fantasy manager must keep their eye on the waiver wire to scoop up overlooked talent. That applies even more for the fantasy astrology league, where there are no midseason trades.
