Astrology Signs to Real Teams Part 2
Last week, I started writing about the real life Major League Baseball teams that I would use to stand in for the Fantasy Astrology Baseball League signs. I started with the teams that I thought had the strongest match to a sign, and even though I didn’t plan it this way, my top six teams were all in the top half of the zodiac wheel. That connection could be one of three things: a coincidence, a matter of personal preference, or deeply significant. You be the judge.
It’s not just color scheme of the team’s uniform, but also divisional placement, relative to the astrology polarity and essences. One additional aspect of team choosing that I didn’t include last time was longevity of the team. I try to limit myself to baseball’s oldest franchises, and the top half all fits that bill:
Pirates (Gemini), founded in 1882 - as the Pittsburgh Alleghenys
Phillies (Aries) and Giants (Leo) founded in 1883 - as the Philadelphia Quakers and the New York Gothams, respectively
Red Sox (Virgo), Athletics (Taurus), and White Sox (Cancer) were all founding members of the American League in 1901 – as the Boston Americans, Philadelphia Athletics, and (big surprise) Chicago White Sox, respectively
This is something to keep in mind as we move to the bottom half of the league. Also, since each of these teams has to share a division with one that I think is a better match (as measured in terms of my very subjective ideas of which teams correspond to which signs), I’ll often be using them as a guide.
Libra – Atlanta Braves
Whatever resource I used to initially determine the color schemes of the FABL signs didn’t give a single color associated with Libra. Rather, it listed the more nebulous pastel color palette. In my charts, I’ve been using magenta, which most closely matches the home caps of the Diamondbacks’ inaugural uniforms. But since Arizona is tied for MLB’s NEWEST franchise, I picked the Braves, whose red and blue on a sometimes cream-colored background can give the illusion of pastel.
Sagittarius – Chicago Cubs
The color associated with Sagittarius is purple, which is the hallmark of the Rockies’ color scheme. However, Colorado is tied for MLB’s SECOND-NEWEST franchise – and since the Archers have to share a division with the yellow-themed Gemini (i.e. the Pirates), I chose the Cubs for SAG. Red and blue are the component colors of purple, and I feel like most Sagittarians would dig pinstripes. Also, the Cubs and the Braves are tied for the earliest foundation date in MLB history (1876), you know these two had to fit in somewhere.
Aquarius – Los Angeles Dodgers
I’ve always pegged the color of Aquarius as light green, kind of like a Seattle Mariners sea-foam/turquoise color. But again, the Seattle franchise was founded in the 1970’s. And I’ve also heard an argument that the Water Bearers should wear blue (even though that’s a shade I would reserve for Virgo and Pisces). But since AQU shares a division with LEO (the clearly-orange Giants), it’s got to be the Dodgers, founded in Brooklyn in 1884.
Scorpio – Los Angeles Angels
Scorpio is associated with dark red, most similarly linked to the weird shoulders on the 2016 to 2019 Diamondbacks. But the Scorpions are in the same division as the Bulls, so they have to coexist with the green of Taurus, and the Angels are the reddest team in the AL West. Believe it or not, LAA is also tied with the Rangers (initially the Washington Senators II) for the oldest franchise in the division. Both teams date back to 1961, one year before the Houston Colt .45s.
Capricorn – Detroit Tigers
It’s a shame, because Capricorn’s color is brown, and the top Capricorn star in the game today (Fernando Tatis Jr.) wears brown with the Padres. But not every astrology sign can be in the NL West, so I linked the Sea Goats with the Tigers. It’s not so much that their navy blue color scheme looks brown, it’s that if you color-shift Detroit’s uniform to the right color, it’s EXACTLY what I would picture a Capricorn wearing on the baseball field.
Pisces – New York Yankees
I have Pisces linked to light blue, or a bright cyan in my databases. Furthermore, there is an almost perfect sync to the Fish mascot in the Marlins. And back when they were named for Florida, their alternates with teal pinstripes and cutoffs give off a distinctly Pisces vibe. Fortunately, there is a team with pinstripes in the same division as the Red Sox (Virgo), and it just happens to be the Red Sox’s biggest rival. The only problem with the Yankees is that their midnight blue color scheme is just too dark and minimalistic for how I picture Pisces. But again, it’s just my personal preference.
Since it turned to Gemini season right before last week’s FABL matchup, next time I’ll do a weekly breakdown of which signs are out in front at the roughly 1/3 mark of 2021.
